There is a hint of autumn colour in the trees and hedgerows, but it’s too early to know whether we will have a magical or mediocre display this year. It’s been a dry autumn so far, and I think that this bodes well for a colourful display of foliage later in the season. A tractor was working the soil as we left for this morning’s walk, traversing the field right up to our garden fence, dwarfing our garden shrubs and making even the garden shed look small. I think that the field was being disked, turning over the top few inches of soil, and leaving perfectly straight shallow furrows. Traditionally, straight furrows are sign of a skilled ploughman, steering true to a carefully selected spot in the distant far hedgerow. Nowadays I wouldn’t be at all surprised to find that it’s all done by SatNav, the tractor leaving a perfect furrow while the driver puts his feet on the steering wheel and reads the daily paper…..
Nice lines and colors. Interesting narrative as well. I believe that the farmer who does the fields near us uses computerized steering in some of his machinery.
Really? Amazing inventions. I remember when my parents bought some virgin farmland and the family had to dig hundreds of holes to plant fruit trees by shovel. And weed the roes with a hoe. I was so impressed by the digger machine that could be towed behind the tracker. My
Oops, my seven year old daughter loved sitting on the digger and putting the trees and grape vines into the holes, planting hundreds of them in a day..
