Weed Flower, 2nd try by shesnapped

Weed Flower, 2nd try

Since it was raining, I cut this baby off and brought it inside. No wind to make it move and blurry, so this is all on me. Used a desk light for a side light and a speedlight flash mounted on the flash shoe. This is the best of the shots. Maybe macro works best with a large flat flower rather than a clump of little ones?

CRITIQUE!
I think you're getting there

What lens are you using Ashley. It still looks blurry to me,maybe my eyes ?

Hand held or tripod? Tripod might be best.

I find it extremely difficult to shoot flowers indoors with a flash. I think your lighting is great. I agree with Joan that a tripod would help. It is very pretty for a weed flower.

Still looks a bit blurry to me too. Maybe leave out the flash. I very rarely take photos of flowers, but when I have done and taken them inside I never use flash, just rely on lighting.

I like how close you got!

Beautiful macro shot and your lighting is perfect. I find it better to do one flower rather than a bunch, but that could be I am just not that good yet.

So dainty and delicate. Indoor lighting is difficult with flowers. Natural lighting is the key for me.

@miata2u Peggy, that's what I think I found, too. The clumps just feel too blurry.

@joansmor @pammerritt Yep. Used the tripod. Thinking the subject matter may not have been the best choice for macro. No dof, and it just has too blurry of a feel.

@peterlgrave Peter, I think the clumps just don't work. I think the flat, single flowers may be a better choice for macro.

@vignouse Richard you are so good at these things. Poor Ashley is trying so hard and having trouble with dof. I would not dare recommend because we both know how much I struggle with that too.
Hope you don't mind Ashley. Not sure he'll see but we can try.

@joansmor Perfectly fine with me, Joan! I'm here to learn!

@shesnapped @joansmor I think you've probably made the best of a bad job here Ashley. I've tried lots of times to photograph plants that have lots of little flowerlets and I've rarely been satisfied. The DoF is inevitably very shallow which results in one or two flowerlets being sharp and a whole bunch being blurry - the overall effect is that of a badly focussed shot, even though it's not.

This is not a bad shot, but we're left wondering what we should be looking at it - a fairly stong vignette might have helped. For this subject to succeed, I think you need to get in really close and isolate just one flowerlet.

Don't be discouraged Ashley - you've done well with a difficult subject.

@vignouse You know I've had the same experience and thought I was doing something wrong. Good to know.

@vignouse Thank you for your comments! I was thinking along those lines, but being my first try, I had no way of knowing for certain. I'll stick to the larger flowers.

Thanks again!
