We awoke to two inches of snow and more seasonal temperatures. My wife took pity our our feathered friends and put the feeder out and filled it. There were 5 of these jockeying for position at one time.
It's such a pleasure to watch feathered friends dining at the feeder, especially when it's so cold out there and much of their natural food is covered by snow. I love everything about how you captured this handsome fellow...FAV!
@bella_ss - I really don't know Sheralee. I have looked that up and the best reason I could find is this; "The color purple (historically) is a mixture where red was more prominent than blue. Royal purple is referred to as crimson, which is the color that appears on the Purple Finch." The feeder was given to us by our neighbors who knew that we enjoyed bird watching.
What a beautiful shot of this pretty bird. Our birds are not using the feeders very much as our exceptionally warm weather means they are still finding food for themselves.
Such a pretty little bird! I love the shallow DOF. We have those too and it took me the longest time to identify them because I was trying to find a 'red' bird, not a purple one.
Maybe the purple/red thing is down to individual colour perception and/or changing nomenclature. Botanists describe flowers that I would call purple as being blue; in the UK, the riders in a hunt wear scarlet riding jackets in a shade that is traditionally called Hunting Pink. I believe there is a nation of people who have no equivalent of the word 'green' in their language, possibly because they do not distinguish it from an other or other colours.
Sorry, rambling on!
Lovely photo, great details and textures. The little bird looks as if he's trying to shelter under the eave of the feed house.
