We took a wild horse tour. These horses are the ancestors of horses that were let free by Spanish explorers in the 1500's. To help with the problems of inbreeding other wild horses from other areas of the Outer Banks are introduced to the different groups.
(I am trying to fill in some of the photos I took while on vacation)
@maggiemae - They are highly treasured and well taken care of. Veterinarians look after them regularly. The one problem they face is when people throw them something to eat and it makes them sick. Their diet is mainly grasses which is coated with salt, but their metabolism has adjusted to it.
Sorry for the group reply. Thank you for your very kind comments and favs!
I wish I could take more of the credit that you are giving me. There are a number of businesses on the Outer Banks that take you out in 4 wheel drive vehicles. We chose one that advertised that they were associated with the Wild Horse Fund. They basically take you for an hour ride through the sand and sand dunes in hopes of coming across horses. Like whale and dolphin watching tours there are no guarantees.
Since they provide the vehicles and drivers you are at their mercy as to where you go or where you stop. So I had no control over where I was in relationship with this horse. I took only my 150-600 mm lens with me because we took one of these tours 5 years ago and all the horses we saw were far off and I wished I had a longer lens. This time he got us so close it was many times too close for my lens. But this and a couple other ones turned out well!
