What Is It? by skipt07

What Is It?

Okay, one more from our visit to see the US Brig Niagra. I thought I'd make this into a question for those who like trivia. This is a part of the ship. Do you know what it is and what it was used for? Post your answers. There is no real prize other than being the first to get the answer.

Thank you all kindly for your comments and favs of the other two photos in this series.
A light set in the deck of a ship to shine light into the lower deck.

Love the colors and the shot - and probably the boards surrounding it - but other than what Lynda said, no idea.

Thank you for guessing/commenting. For those who guessed, you are close. It is a prism and they are placed strategically into the deck so that sunlight is projected into the lower deck.

@skipt07 I had the right idea, wrong name. They are amazingly effective for a dark space. There is a similar effect using water bottles in the roof of homes in 3rd world areas. They provide light in homes without electricity.

@lynbonn - Yes I have heard of water bottles being used in third world countries to light their homes.
