My grandparents immigrated to the United States from Eastern Europe in the first decade of the 20th century. Not speaking any English, and being small children travelling alone, New York City must have been very intimidating for them. They reunited with their families in Manhattan and first settled on the Lower East Side, living in tenement apartment buildings just like this one I walked past with my son. Other than modern windows, these buildings don't appear to have changed much from one hundred years ago.
@sjodell Thanks, Sarah! @allisonrap Thank you Allison, this was one of those rare shots I knew I would like as soon as I saw it on the camera's LCD screen! @nikkic Thank you, Nikki - if only these old walls could talk!

I really admire this photo. It has an almost unreal feel to it I think because the brickwork seems to have a white coating of something and the reflections on the glass look like a painting. Certainly a picture to make you look and look again.
@mariadarby Thank you so much for the thoughtful and kind comments, Maria. I took a number of images of this tenement, but this one stood out as my favorite. I am so glad you like it.
