1970 Plymouth Superbird by soboy5

1970 Plymouth Superbird

Arguably the most outrageous design of its day (or ever), the 1970 Plymouth Superbird started out as a Road Runner and was converted to a beaked, winged warrior before being sold to the public. The idea behind this car was to win at NASCAR racing and to lure the king of stock car racing, Richard Petty, back to Plymouth.

In 1970, the manufacturers had to sell what they raced, so this is why the public could buy this race car for street use. It did not sell well due to its outrageous design, but a perfectly restored example is now worth $500,000.

This begins my new mini series of interesting American cars from 1960 - 1970. Stay tuned.

Great nostalgic shot! My husband bought a blue 1973 Plymouth Roadrunner when he was a senior. Sure wish we still had it!

My second brand new car was a '72 Plymouth Roadrunner. It was all black with a white broken stripe across the back part of the roof extending down the rear quarter panels. It had a 340 cubic inch engine with a Hurst 4 speed shifter. Lots of power with little weight in the rear end. No foil.
