"it's six o'clock in the evening. do you know where your children are?"
that was the announcement you'd hear on the radio, as everyone stopped to observe the evening angelus hour, followed by a slow organ music, and in the background you'd hear the ringing of church bells. the street lamps would automatically turn on and for most children it was a sign that we needed to be home, wash up and prepare for dinner. come just a little bit later and you know there is punishment to be exacted.
such was our practice growing up in a small suburb in manila. when you see that light come on, you knew you're in trouble if you didn't get home right away. even on my last visit, my father would always look at the clock and ask if i needed to go back to where i was staying.
i had been photographing structures with clock towers and this was the only one that i had actually caught at six in the evening. for information on the angelus hour, here's a link if you are so inclined as to check it out: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Angelus
thank you for your visits and comments; i really appreciate and very thankful for them. i shall catch up on yours starting tonight.
Interesting. I was raised Baptist so know very little about the Catholic traditions. My husband is Catholic but not a practicing Catholic. Your picture is a good representation of your family tradition.
It's very sad that little April Jones who disappeared last month didn't know about this.... Gorgeous tones and atmosphere in this and like the story attached.....
Awesome story
