spotted it from half a block away and i thought this car was a-awesome! and it was. there was a promotion of the 2014 pan-am games in downtown toronto today. chevrolet, one of the official sponsors, will have a draw to win a car. i told the people manning the booth that i want to win this particular car. wouldn't it be a riot to drive around in this? you'd think i'm the official UN ambassador!
in any case, the pan-am folks were asking passersby if they want to be video-taped welcoming people to toronto. no one was stepping up and i felt bad that no one wanted to so i volunteered. the man explained that they simply want torontonians to say something welcoming to the participant athletes, their friends and families to our city. so i had my first take but mid-way i had a long pause because i almost said the commonwealth games and forgot that it was for the pan-am games. i'm sixty, so i forget. plus the videoman said a motorcycle was passing by so my voice got drowned.
so on to take two. i decided i'd make my welcome speech real short. i think i said something more or less like this: "hello, my name is victoria and i would like to welcome all the pan-am game athletes, their families and friends, to our beautiful city of toronto!" short and sweet and the director was quite impressed. well, i didn't tell him i used to be a member of the toastmasters club and was an erst-while radio announcer. i just let him think i was impressive. tee-hee!
so after he gushed some more, i asked, i need to sign a waiver, yes? so i signed a waiver - heck, i'm pretty sure if that makes the cut, they will be showing that to all cities and countries participating in the games. i forgot if i was still holding my camera during the videotaping. i even volunteered to be a volunteer and my name was entered in the draw and i really really really want that van!
A multinational van for sure. Love your story! Unfortunately I do not see my flag, hopefully it appears on the other side! Although I'm not sure we have athletes competing.
That is so cool, Vikki! I mean, Victoria! Hee hee YOu are going to be famous! I was in Toastmasters! for a VERY short time in 1987. I moved to Atlanta from college in Carrollton, GA...the guy I dated then was 5years older than me. I was just turned 22 and he was 27. He was a psychology major, and very into bettering oneself. to understand him, I read Dale Carnegie and that sort....the guy who wrote Battefield Earth..what was that guys' name? And he wanted to do Toastmasters...so we went a few times. But I think this was where I put my foot down. I was teaching school and did not want to spend my saturdays doing public speaking, which is a nightmare for me! I do it, but I was not going to do it on my weekends when I was 22~! haha You will need to post a clip of your "welcome to Toronto" thing when it comes out! And yes, The US flag is right there on the truck's hindquarters.
@salza - thank you, sally. i think the flags are only those of the countries in the americas. but when i won it, i'll add everyone's flags in. :-)
@aurorajane - so don't you dare ignore me when you see me in this car! haha! thank you, aj.
@espyetta - funny story. that's how i would always get in trouble when i was young. teacher would ask for volunteers to sing or dance etc. and i'd feel bad that nobody would raise their hands so i would. next thing you know i'm loaded with work. it was the same thing with toastmasters. i thought rather naively that people go to meet and toast bread while discussing the events of the day. tee-hee!!
@claireuk - i think the union jack's in everything! thank you, claire.
@678tabby - thank you june. i am so desperately hoping. when i win that car, i'd be driving everywhere to take photos, maybe tour cities of 365ers!
@bruni - thank you, bruni. are you in europe? have you been gone a while?
@eniaral - thank you, laraine. you will let me know when you see it, right? i was wearing a lose top!
@summerfield Yes 6 weeks in all. coming home Wednesday. we're visiting Hans's family in Remscheid, Germany in Rheinland-Westfalia. while there took several trips to first Holland, then North of here to the Luneburg. a little later going South to Wurzburg, Rothenburg and a little further to Heidelberg and back to Remscheid. if you are interested I took pictures in all of these interesting places
Yes I do! And I see yours too, although I must sadly confess I would not correctly identify any of the other flags. I guess we should start a "show me your flag" discussion so we could learn them! I hope you win the car by the time we meet. Maybe by then I'll have my passport and we can drive it all over Canada together on a 365 adventure!
