i said yesterday that all the photos i've taken were busts. there was a statue that i particularly wanted to shoot that didn't pan out. because it was just one subway stop from my office, i went back there at lunchtime today. it was behind the st. andrew's presbyterian church the bell tower of which was featured two years ago for my flash-of-red february http://365project.org/summerfield/365-again/2013-02-06
to get to the statue, i had to pass by the front entrance of the church with its three arched doorways. today only the middle door was open. this here is the west doorway. the church had just undergone a massive refurbish which finished about three years ago.
it had been snowing off and on since saturday morning and all over the city there had been quite an accumulation of the white stuff. the thick snow covering the steps towards the massive door provided an interesting foreground to this door, with the footprints visibly going towards the door, which was closed.
today i tried processing from raw. the footprints were not clearly visible in the jpeg version but in my camera they show quite clearly. processing the jpeg made the door too dark when i lowered the contrast to show the footprints. in raw, i was actually able to get clear details both of the door and the footprints on the steps. it was fun for this purpose.
thank you for your kind visits and comments; know that they are greatly appreciated.
The doorway would be quite dark and the snow so bright so it would be a challenge! Done so well and makes an interesting shot of the door! Keeping the heat in!
I love the carving around that door- nicely captured! One of the fellows at photo club is trying to get me to shoot in raw. I have too much to learn on your camera first. Baby steps I keep telling him!
Good for you for trying to edit in RAW. I've switched recently and am so happy with that decision. At least until my computer stops working. Do you shoot in JPEG and RAW at the same time or were you switching? Fab door, brave of you to go out hunting for a subject in that weather!
This photo makes me think who walked through the door and how long ago, one lone person ? You have had a good month of black and white. Not an easy task ! I enjoye your street photography, creative bokeh, and just all around work you have done. Its really quite impressive. My challenge for you this week is interpret "under construction"
impressive shot, for many reasons, like how you composed it around the door with the footsteps leading to it but the challenge you set for yourself to bring the steps in the snow. i have been learning about exposure compensation so know a tiny bit what you dealt with in the editing. very nice.
@olivetreeann - there's certainly a lot of beautiful structures around here. thank you, ann.
@kt8ird - thank you, kate. i've set my cameras to shoot in jpeg and raw. if i have a problem processing the jpeg, i "consult" the raw version. for posting here, i mostly process the jpeg version, but if i want to have something printed, i process from raw.
Well, based on those footprints we know at least ONE person went to church! Nice capture, Vikki. And here I will apologize for getting so far behind in my comments. Don't be surprised to see some comments from me on really old postings.
@ithinkithunk - thank you. send some here. :-)
@maggiemae - thank, you, maggiemae.

@nanderson - thank you, nancy.
@voiceprintz - thank you, jt.
@warrenzx9 - mulling over your challenge. i think it's do-able for me. thank you, warren.
@catsmeowb - agh! exposure compensation, could never understand it. :-) thank you, camille.
@ceilidh - thank you, margaret.
