good-bye! by summerfield

good-bye!

"leave your flowers at my door
i leave them for the one who's left behind"
- p.j.mccartney

toronto bade good-bye to one of its recent landmarks, the m.v. jandran which sat at the harbour since 1975 and was 'captain john's seafood restaurant' until the city closed off its water supply due to non-payment of taxes. the boat was towed away this morning to a salvage yard where it will be torn for scraps.

a lot of people, including the media, came to cover the story. half of them believed it should stay where it's at, make it into a museum or something. the other half, mainly the condo owners apparently, thought it was an extremely large eyesore and wanted it gone.

here they were waiting for police to come and escort the vessel out. i got to photograph its former captain (whose name escapes my senior mind) as he greeted the media (including moi because they thought i was 'media') and shook his hand.

i have a photograph of this boat in my first year http://365project.org/summerfield/365/2011-11-03

i went back at lunchtime and the towing was long completed.

thank you for your kind visits and comments; know that they are truly appreciated.
It does look much better in the first photo but I'd have to agree its an eyesore now! Good to be in the media pack - you never know you might have got a free lunch!

It's definitely looking a tad worse for wear, loads of rust around. It is sad to see the end of an era but no doubt something else will soon fill it's spot.

Oh how sad.

It's always sad to see the decline of such a beautiful vessel.

nice shot, how unbelievable the decline in such a short time. so sad.

It's a shame it has to go but there is a big difference in its appearance from your first photo to this one!

What a shame! This looks *nothing* like the beautiful ship in the photo you referenced! (Just looked up and see I said nearly identically what Katy wrote!) I worry that we're always too hasty to tear old things apart without thinking of the time taken to make them, and might they be used in another fashion...

I read about this famous landmark leaving TO! I'll miss seeing it when I'm up there visiting. Was on this boat many years ago for a company party.

Such a sad story! Wish someone had found a way to repurpose it the way those folks want to repurpose Bent's. So I guess we can all say we knew you when Ms. Media Person!
