Fred's back in the garden again. This time he's sitting beside a 2 year old hosta that I grew from seed. It's a super special hosta for me for several reasons. One, because the seeds are from a good friend and hosta breeder; two, they're from a cross between two hand picked parents, one being "Gray Cole"; three, my grandson Cole and I planted these seeds together in little seedling trays; and four, it's a beautiful colour, with a thick slug resistant leaf. I'm not sure how big it will be when it's finally full grown. Fred's about a foot tall and in case you missed his first appearance at 365, he normally sits on our bathroom counter.
Many thanks for dropping by. I'm thrilled with another appearance on the pop page. It's been awhile ...... ;-) THANKS!
That is a neat hosta - and I never knew that you could grow them from seed - not sure why I hadn't thought about it -- I always divide my clumps.
thanks
@friendie Thanks for dropping by Carole! I divide too, if a clump gets too big, particularly if it's one I like and want another one. Growing from seed will give you new varieties. I have a friend who meticulously pollinates certain hostas to generate new varieties with characteristics they inherit from their "parents". Alternatively, you could also let the bees to the work and take your chances on good progeny.
thanks
