The Rideau Canal, opened in 1832, is the oldest continuously operated canal system in North America. It connects the city of Kingston [and Lake Ontario] to our nation's capital city of Ottawa [and the Ottawa River].
This pic is facing down river, almost at the end of the canal, with the Ottawa River not quite visible through the arches of the bridge.
I posted another pic of this canal a few months ago. http://365project.org/sunnygreenwood/365/2011-06-18"> That earlier pic is taken from the bridge shown in this pic and is pointing up river. Both pics are in the down town area of Ottawa, near the University of Ottawa, major shopping and entertainment centres and federal government buildings.
Great photo - it's interesting that this is one end of the Rideau Canal because the photo I just posted of the Martello Tower is the other end where the Rideau Canal meets Lake Ontario in Kingston.
Great shot Anne - it looks so majestic! Ive always had a special affinity to Canada. Besides being a great neighbor, as a young kid I wanted to go there to play ice hockey. Loved the Montreal until they beat my Rangers in Stanley Cup.
Very nice. My family rented a cottage on Bob's lake near Kingston, Ontario when my kids were growing up. I remember the Rideau Lake chain. Love the picture.
Ottawa is a beautiful city! I would love to visit there someday. Today I finally made your red pepper jelly (only I made it as jam rather than strain it). It is incredible! Thank you for sharing your recipe with me!
brilliant shot, anne! awesome. i promised myself that next year in the spring, i must see the tulips. been here twenty-some years and i've not been there to see the tulips. i've seen the rideau on a really really cold winter's day, twice! but not on a decent weather. love this!
