This Red-breasted Nuthatch was curious about the suet I had set out but ended up just eating the sunflower seeds that were beside the suet. This bird is probably a female, having a softer shade of red.
Here's an interesting bit of home-front info from Cornell Lab of Ornithology: "The Red-breasted Nuthatch collects resin globules from coniferous trees and plasters them around the entrance of its nest hole. It may carry the resin in its bill or on pieces of bark that it uses as an applicator. The male puts the resin primarily around the outside of the hole while the female puts it around the inside. The resin may help to keep out predators or competitors. The nuthatch avoids the resin by diving directly through the hole."
Again some interesting information, and hopefully the little one has a great sense of judgment when flying through the opening to her home. Your bird photos are so nice and clear. I love all the detail.
Excellent Capture! I do love the Nuthatch - I enjoy both at the feeders. You have caught this little one perfectly! Thanks for the info - had not known about the resin! Splendid portrait, Anne!
She is so beautiful I just want to hug her! Do you think I could have her for my very own? She makes me happy! I also like how the bird is centered and the stump is off to the right. I will learn this someday.
Super! You are so up close and personal here. I can see every downy feather! I loved the info about the resin and how they avoid their own resin obstacle. Thanks for sharing!
