Another Nuthatch, a cousin to the one in yesterday's shot. This time it's a White Breasted Nuthatch, probably a male with the dark shiny cap on top. The females normally have a slightly more greyish cap but they can also have dark black caps so it's hard to say.
For those who want a bit more info, here' what wikipedia is saying today: "The White-breasted Nuthatch forages for insects on trunks and branches, and is able to move head-first down trees. Seeds form a substantial part of its winter diet, as do acorns and hickory nuts that were stored by the bird in the fall. The nest is in a hole in a tree, and the breeding pair may smear insects around the entrance as a deterrent to squirrels."
Many thanks for dropping by. Thanks too for all your kind comments and fav's on yesterday's Red Breasted Nuthatch. Much appreciated!
He's a looker! I don't think I have seen any of these where I live here in Georgia. I have learned alot about birds since shooting some....how many can grip on to tree bark and hang upside down and such..... Nice job capturing this fellow!
Wonderful shot, Anne! I love the part about them smearing insects around to deter the squirrels - I think finally, someone has outwitted the squirrels!
@timandelke not yet but apparently there's one about 20 km from here ... or at least there was last year. there's also some Crossbills which have scissor bills ... they're interesting
I love their little feet. Can you imagine how cold they must get? We have nuthatches in Vermont too so I've seen them walking down the tree. If nothing else, we get an education in birds on this website. I think a lot of people take them for granted or at least don't enjoy their beauty everyday. Our bird feeders are up too.
Fantastic Capture! I love the close up and detail! Excellent shot, Anne! I have many at my feeders - not able to get one to hold still while outside to snap a shot!
Another gorgeous bird, Anne. The whole way home from Vermont I thought about the bird feeders I want to get and where I would hang them. but smeared insects?!!! I'm just putting out a separate bowl for the squirrels.
I've never seen one of these little guys. I love his coloring! Very interesting information, Anne. Thank you for including it! I am really enjoying your bird pics!!!
