Our property is all woods, no grass, with just enough of a clearing for the house, driveway and septic system. It was cleared for lumber about 80-100 years ago from what we've been told, but several white pines were left uncut because they had forked or crooked trunks and so were not valuable for lumber. This is one of them.
It's about 40 meters tall [130'] and at least 150 years old. The trunk is almost 4 meters [12'] around in circumference at my eye level.
This might be more interesting than you know. "By the late 17th century, due to the number of ships built and repaired, Great Britain had few trees remaining which were suitable to be used as masts for merchant and naval ships. White pine trees were considered to be the best type of tree to use for these single-stick masts. To maintain Britain's naval and trading advantage, laws were passed in North America to protect white pine trees until they were fully grown for British ship building." Wickipedia Great shot, Anne, I also love white pine trees.
i really enjoy seeing this and hearing about your place. I would love to live in a place like yours.......nature, being outdoors in it......that is what i like to do most.
White pines are my absolute favorite tree! That one is huge and I love your POV here. Plus it just plain made me happy to see this tonight. Our daughter's boyfriend who is a tree guy told us at dinner tonight that he cut down a white pine today that was his biggest tree yet. The tree had split and the split side was aimed to crash on the house. It still made me sad.
How lovely to have such majestic trees on your property! We have loads on the property at the cabin, so I have to get my tree fix whenever we're there, lol
great angle. i have a very deep amount of respect for old trees. my mother used to tell me when i was a kid, that there live in old trees the souls of our ancestors and if you kill a tree you kill those souls. i hate it when a tree is chopped down or when it is destroyed by a storm. i always say a prayer for the souls that lost their home.
I love big trees. If you want to get technical, you can measure the diameter at breast height (by either calculation from the circumference or by using a special measuring tape that has diameter units marked on it instead of normal measures).

We have white pines in our woods. They grow very fast.
