I went up to the rspb reserve at Dinas today and although I didn't manage to see anything we don't get in the garden (I was hoping for a dipper or a grey wagtail) It was lovely to capture a yellowhammer in a more natural setting than on the floor under the bird feeders.
Another great capture. I wonder if we don't get yellowhammers this far south or whether our garden lacks appeal for them but I have never seen one here.
@carole_sandford Thank you Carole. It's great that you've got them in the garden this year. Hopefully they'll breed and then stay. We never saw any for the first few years that we were here but now they're here all year round.
@happypat Thank you Pat. They must not be in your area or they'd come for the rich pickings under the bird feeders. They never go on the feeders but they clear up underneath.
@judithdeacon Thank you Judith. I really don't know what attracts yellowhammers to an area. I've only seen them once or twice other than in our garden and at the rspb reserve nearby. Once I saw a pair on the coast path in Dorset, on top of the cliffs. It couldn't have been more different than here in mid Wales. They never go on the bird feeders in the garden, they just clear up the mess underneath made by the other birds, particularly the nuthatches.
@beryl Thank you Beryl.
