This was taken with my waterproof canon point and shoot while kayaking so the quality is iffy, but I wanted to post to document the feel of being on one of Beaver Island's inland lakes. Font Lake is really shallow (3 feet in most spots) though it's one of the largest inland lakes on the island. It's surrounded by marshland and forests so on a good day, you can spot birds like the heron, eagles, kingfishers, ducks, and loons. It's very quiet (no motors allowed) and today, we were the only ones on the lake. Someday I'm going to be brave enough to risk taking my camera and telephoto with me. For two other exciting birds I FINALLY captured on camera, see extras album, http://365project.org/taffy/the-also-ran-ph/2013-08-18. I've been stalking the osprey all summer!
A week from today we are back in Chicago. There are so many more Beaver Island scenes I am still hoping to share!
They are such skittish birds! I had one fly right up to my dock and immediately did a turn around when it saw me even though I didn't blink an eye! I take my camera in the kayak all tHe time. I have a national geographic camera bag (Costco) and it has a shower cap cover that I put over it. Mind you, I'm not kayaking in really rough water and there are few motor boats.
Well...this is a FAV! Love the pose of the Heron and the whole scene is fantastic!! The lillie pads in the foreground...the ripples in the water, the greenery!! Just love it!!
A beautiful scene and the heron just makes it perfect!! Yes I don't think I would chance my big camera in a kayak - I think you did the right thing and this shot is great!! Thinking about it - I wouldn't be in a kayak anyway so wouldn't have to make the choice - the boat would have to be much bigger for me!! LOL!! Fav by the way!!
That is a beautiful scene on many levels! Glad you braved taking your camera! Love, not only the Heron, but the layers of colors and textures surrounding him.
@maggiemae I loved your comment about how it must be clear! It's so shallow that if you put your hand in, it comes out filled with grit. We were all so mucky from getting kayaks in, getting them out, and cleaning them up, that there were lines for the showers and everyone had to hose off on the deck before they could come into the house to take a shower!
@pamknowler Aw -- kayaks are great fun! I'm not much of a boater and would recommend them to everyone! A great way to be a part of nature -- and good arm exercise (ugh!).
