When the sun sets in the desert, you see an amazing red color across the mountain and valley. The key is to be standing at the right spot for the shot, which I wasn't. So, this was captured as the red was fading away, standing at the edge of a cliff with my tripod providing false comfort that it would protect me from falling over.
Taken in the Valley of the Moon in the Chilean Atacama desert, combined bracketed shots using Photomatix.
And a very belated thank you for the wonderful birthday wishes -- much appreciated! Trying not to feel a year older! And a thank you for your comments and favs that put my geyser photo on PP which was quite exciting and made getting up at 4:30 a.m. worth it!
For another view of this amazing valley, check out Junko's shot at http://365project.org/jyokota/challenges-and/2014-12-17
@rosiekerr Thanks Rosie! Apparently, this is where they practiced the moon landing back in the 60s! There were areas with such amazingly high dunes, plus the rocky areas. It was really amazing.
What an incredible sight this is Taffy. I'm so glad you photographed it so we can all enjoy this fantastic place. It's a fabulous layered shot of a place I half-expect to see fabulous beasties appearing from the nooks and crannies. Love it to bits. Fav
I have no idea how I missed this shot.....I think you are posting things out of sequence just to confuse me! ;-)) Seriously, big congrats on the double TT this week, and this shot is amazing, and truly captures that area. In answer to your question, yes, that was terrifying, it was about 20 years ago when we were young and foolish (well, maybe not that young, but definitely foolish). and I was traveling through South America with my best friend from college. This was when we decided to leave NYC and before settling in California, on an open ended ticket. We did a lot of independent land travel, there was no guide involved, we took a local bus, not a tourist bus, that dropped us off someplace where we could hike down into the valley in the afternoon! Nobody warned us that it would get so dark and cold so fast, and that there would be no transportation in sight!! We survived, and that's what matters, but that is something I will never forget!
