I saw this moth (or little butterfly??) appear to be looking longingly at the lights in the distance. Taken in Junko & Bill's front yard with my little Nikon P&S. I had not been using it at all and decided to see how I would like carrying this around on the days I wasn't carrying my DSLR. Turns out, it's been great for closeups -- all the recent food shots were taken with it as well -- and handy for those times when I'd otherwise have to use my iPhone camera (which in the 5, is not that great - I know I'm now several generations behind). Wishing all a good weekend.
I like your DoF, and especially like how you captured the angle which gives a contemplative feel to this image. Having seen this on your computer, I was surprised it looks darker here. Perhaps this is like my purple mountain haze, which uploaded with a darker cast than showing on my screen?
@northy That is VERY helpful! It's actually a deal breaker. I've been using my Nikon P&S to see if I can get back into a smaller camera for walkabout when not on a photo walk. Turns out, it's a really nice camera - just missing the viewfinder which is why I'm going to replace it. And it turns out that for how I'm enjoying using it, I need macro and telephoto capabilities. I may see if NIkon has an updated version of this one that solves the viewfinder problem.
@northy Looks like Nikon is releasing a new one October 13 Coolpix B700. Looks larger than what I want...just noticed the announcement and am googling reviews. I do like the smaller body for ease of carrying -- purse ready if not pocket ready. Ah...the never ending search!
@taffy y'know, i've been carrying my em5 of late, and i am finding it quite manageable... i bought the sony RX when i was having to lug my laptop everywhere for work and it just wasn't feasible to carry anything bigger than the p&s as well... having changed to a job where i am not having to bring my laptop home every night my load is considerably lightened... also seriously thinking of upgrading my iPhone so that it can become my ever-ready camera :)
@northy This Nikon B700 looks interesting but it's 'boxy' rather than fitting in a pocket. But it has a 24-1440 zoom, viewfinder, and flexible liveview panel. Shoots RAW, etc. If it were half as deep it would be perfect! I'm thinking about the 7 plus, but that's a hefty investment if I buy a P&S as well. Decisions, decisions...but I'm using a 5 (not even 5S) so will be getting a phone at some point within the year, just not as soon as a new P&S. Unless, I guess, no one wants mine and then I'll just keep using it til I find the ideal one.
@taffy i have a 6 and thinking of upgrading to the 6SE now that the 7 is out... i wouldn't go for the 7+ which has the best camera... i think the 6SE is supposed to be quite good, and with IOS10 supporting RAW i think it should be quite workable... i've got some decent pics with the 6, but i only have 16gb and that's not enough storage for shooting in high res mode...
@northy I just found a P7800 which is identical to my 7700 but has a viewfinder. It's only $400 on Amazon so less than the others I've been looking for. It's been interesting for me to force myself to use the 7700 this week -- and haven't been out much (as you can tell from the food shots or from the car shots), but I actually really like it. It's not as small as the Sony ones but fits in my purse easily or in a jacket pocket -- too big for pants pocket for me.
Interesting to read what you have found with the 6SE. I think the friend I'm visiting next week has that one -- I'll check it out. The 7+ is just too much for a phone for me.
