Advice seemed timely as I worked through some older images. My goal over the next 2 months is to clean up 5 hard drives before transferring photo files to one 3TB backup storage. Seems to be a good winter project. We moved yesterday into our city rental condo where we'll be at least til mid-March. It's cozy but functional and in our actual neighborhood once we are able to move into our place. Thus, trying to keep calm and drink tea!
Image taken in Adelaide, Australia during a 2014 visit, in a coffee shop/restaurant that I visited with a small group of faculty from the nearby university.
Thanks for your good wishes on this move, and kind comments/favs on the planescape and flower shot. We've just gotten Internet up and running and I'm catching up.
Pleased to hear the move went ok and you are in! Be happy for as long as it lasts! Good things come to those who wait and my goodness have you waited! I need to have a sort out of last years images before I transfer them to the external hard drive. Mind you I have forgotten how to do it! Lol! Fav for this great b&w image!
@pamknowler Ha! That's why I haven't done it while we were in Mexico (my original plan) -- it takes SO much longer than I thought it would, but actually feels good to delete hundreds of old, not great images. But I also can't remember how to move the photos in Lightroom so they are in the catalogue -- or how to find the photos when I've imported them from Aperture libraries. A much bigger task than I had thought it would be.
I keep saying that I need to clean up my photos and free up space on the external drives, but I have not managed to get anything done! I am now looking at nearly 6 years worth of daily photos. My aim this year is to be more ruthless when I download the card and delete straight away instead of coming back another day. I know it's going to take ages to sort through especially since in the early days I didn't have a very good system and didn't always save the original file name!
Wonderful shot. Sounds like a good time to get your folders organized and to use some older ones you have. I've been cleaning mine up some, too. Best of luck with your move.
@taffy re the LR query. R Click on one of the photos that has been moved and is blacked out in LR. It will ask if you want to find the photo and you say yes and it will ask you to select correct folder and photo...then most of the photos will follow suit
Now that is a job that I keep putting off... deleting unwanted files! Moving house is not something I would look forward to, although it would mean throwing lots of stuff that I don't need so that would have to be a good thing.
I like this image and how you can look around and get a feel for the cafe.
Love this candid and the sign to accompany it. Don't envy you the task ahead though. When I decided to upload all my photos to Dropbox as a backup of my other backups I discovered that I had so many I'd need to take out a Business licence (not cheap). Since DB had a 30-day free trial of the Biz licence I opted in to that, and went pedal to the metal cleaning up the kind of thing you're facing. About a week before the trial ran out I'd junked enough rubbish to fit the photos into the $10/month plan, ie the one I'd intended to use. Good luck, lots of tea will be needed, I'll be thinking of you, and sending moral support.
This is a lovely choice for the task that lies ahead. Keeping calm is always a good idea. :) Glad that you and Jim are somewhat temporally settled in your neighborhood, after all of the difficulty. It feels great to get rid of old, unwanted, not-so-good photos... but it is so time-consuming! A worthy endeavor, to be sure.
@golftragic@rosiekerr So today's progress: (1) deleted about 200 images from January 2016 along and (2) ruthlessly deleted another 50 photos from the Cabo trip. And along the way, found 3 photos I really like that I didn't know how to edit a year ago and fortunately still saved. It's an interesting process that is taking a lot longer than I would have guessed. And this is just from the past year. I am guessing when I go back to 2013, it will mean far more to delete and far fewer 'hits' of photos worth editing. Good winter project.
Sounds like you will be drinking lots of tea, or maybe something stronger. We have our photos set up to do a backup once a month onto a 3 TB external hard drive.
Smashing wonderful, probably slaughtering any sort of British/Australian expression but seemed to fit, I could spend a very long time exploring this image, so much fun. Fav! PS Don't let the hard drives give you any lip.
