Standing on the Corner Watching All the Cars Go By

My get-pushed challenge from LIane (@lfrans) this week was to capture movement. After several failed attempts, I spent some time this morning on the corner of Monroe & Halstead, in the center of GreekTown, taking panning shots as cars, cyclists, an ambulance, trucks, and a motocycle sped by. I chose this shot because the truck was fairly clear. Yet, the blurred landmarks captured the context of the photo. It was a great challenge with a week of good practice opportunities, despite the limited success. I am looking forward to being in a better setting (Navy Pier is high on my list with its Ferris Wheel) with more interesting potential subjects.
PS -- the reason I was outside on this particular corner is that I'd planned to take photos of fruits/veggies/spices in Mariano's -- a grocery store that until this morning I used to like -- when a manager came up to me as I was shooting, and told me it was 'corporate policy' and I was not allowed to do so. I asked to speak to his superior. He had the next level up guy come over to explain why this policy was in place. The explanation was: "I don't know, but it is corporate policy." Egad! So I left and ended up "standing on the corner, watching..."
Congrats Taffy! This looks amazing! Definitely makes me want to give it a try. Great job!

Love it! The blue blur background is beautiful in contrast with the redbrown? car.

@lfrans Thanks for a terrific challenge Liane! I learned a lot this week about settings, speed of movement to capture, background that makes the object stand out effectively, and so on. I hope you like this one! I may try to do one more tomorrow if I can get to an interesting spot.

Excellent panning shot! I like the skyline background and focused jeep. I find them incredibly hard to do successfully!!

love it! you did an awesome job. I love how the carreally stands out and how the buildings in the background are blurred. fav!

@pflaume @sjouk @kwind @lfrans Thanks Lisa, Sjouk, Kwind (wondering if your first name is Karen, Kathy, etc?), and LIane! It makes me feel like not being allowed to photograph in the grocery store was fate! Liane, thanks for the fav!

Very strong! I love how the blue sky pulled across the buildings to make it appear like a spot tint across the top half.
March 30th, 2013
@vankrey Uh...truth be told, it is a blue tint! The sky was kind of drab so I thought it helped the shot to add that bit of color (a blue filter). But thanks for thinking it was effective!

Great panning shot -- and just enough detail in the background to make it interesting!

nice movement shot, clear detail on the vehicle and blurred background, well done

Excellent panning! In this photo it was important to keep the background recognizable, and you nailed it.

Great panning. Feels like the Jeep is going very fast.
