I love golf! Another addiction Jim doesn't understand. And what better than to combine golf and photography? Beaver Island's course is a small, 9-hole place that is very relaxed. No T-Times required. You can skip around the holes. It's usually empty late afternoon (when the light is best for photography). You're likely to run into geese, turkeys, deer, and other birds I can't identify. So, today I took a break from weeding and conference calls and played (more of less) for the first time since last summer. Unfortunately, I didn't check my camera battery before I left and it died shortly after I got there, so my only photos were iPhone ones (which means the wildlife weren't really an option). This is the first hole -- I was racing the rain. Our greens aren't green and the fairway is more like a rough on other courses. But it's fun!
Now that looks inviting!!
Golf and photography-perfect :-)
I'm going to have to Fav this one :-D
Love the shot, the composition and the sky are wonderful
Great shot! I've been trying to figure out a way to safely transport my camera when I go golfing. How do you do it? We go with another couple, and the men spend a lot of time looking for their balls, while the other woman and I just gossip. Mentally, I curse myself for missing all sorts of photo ops!
Oh, you have a good amount of green there. I haven't played golf in ages and took a glance at my clubs right before our yard sale (I couldn't bring myself to part with them because I keep thinking "some day" I'll get back to it). I took up golf late in life so I could play with my then 90 year-old-grandmother (she made it to 103 and played golf till she was 101). She was truly one of the first women to ever play. This photo is so great with the phone--has your signature sky too! :)
@timandelke It's tricky. I think the golf etiquette about keeping the game moving is critical so I'm hesitant to bring my camera with me when I'm playing in a foursome. A few of my golf buddies are very lay back about the game and take it slow -- looking at flowers and insects, etc. When I play with one of them, I figure the camera is okay as long as there's no one behind us. I decided that I'll go out by myself occasionally and then I'd bring my DSLR but may not play a full round (it's heavy carrying that when I also carry my clubs!). I bought a P&S (Nikon P7700) which shoots in RAW and has manual settings for situations where I don't think my DSLR is appropriate to use (or just to bulky to carry) and am thinking that I might have to just use that one instead.
@taffy Thanks for the quick reply! You're right - wouldn't want to hold anyone up and it's heavy. I'm thinking I might forgo the clubs one day and just walk the course with my camera.
@timandelke Yep -- that would make sense especially if carrying your DSLR. Or you could put out with everyone but take photos from the t-off through the fairway play. Golf courses tend to have such great landscapes and sometimes wildlife!
A dilemma for sure. So much etiquette on the golf course. But sounds like Beaver Island's is pretty laid back. Love the sky here, the placement of the clubs and the club resting against your bag.
@danielwsc You're a golfer?? Wow -- I can't believe that never came up. That would be great to play when I'm back! I've only played twice so far this summer, but am hoping it will pick up more over the next few weeks.
