We had dinner tonight at friends who live on the St. James harbor. This is the deep water harbor that I've featured in some other daytime shots. The lighting was wonderful tonight and the lake was a mirror. As the sun was setting, everything seemed to glow. I'm curious about which of these two versions is more effective. V1, the focus is only on the pier, and I liked the symmetry of the pier and the wild grasses as off-set. V2, I liked how the pier seems to point us to the dingy and the sailboat. I kept going back and forth of which to post and decided to post both to see what you think (if you don't mind viewing both), and why. http://365project.org/taffy/365/2013-08-31
I think the issue is preferable perspective and what the boats versus the grasses add, but I'm not sure. Thanks in advance if you do take the time to view both! I'm so happy being back on the island -- today was such a fun photo day!
I think I prefer this one - it's a tough call though. The reflection and lighting are really beautiful. The angles created by the end of the dock with the reflection are alluring and the mast drawing a line thought the shot adds interest. I wonder if you shifted a bit to have the dock "cover" the houses on the far shore - it might keep the focus on the pier and the sailboat.
I love them both - they are so different.
I like this one best I think, because of the boats, and the strong reflections.
The color is fabulous. Had to fav this.
I definitely prefer this shot, Taffy. The colours are stronger and the boats add to the beauticul composition. Also the reflection and ladder stand out better.
They are both incredible reflections and colours and light Taffy, but this one has the pier leading into the shot taking my eye to the boat, rather than across the shot. So, I prefer this one.
I prefer this one. I like the boat reflection, the bright blue of the water and sky, the clouds in the sky, the streaks in the water. Just more colorful and interesting.
I like the movement and deeper blues in this one, but I think I would like it better if you had either stood up higher or lower to prevent the pier and the horizon trees from overlapping.

This is a duplicate response (I replied on the other photo first) so sorry for those who are in both, but I don't want to leave anyone out who took the trouble to view twice.
Thank you all so much for taking the time to view the two of them and give me feedback on why you preferred one over the other. I've learned some is personal preference. Other things that I've learned and will pay more attention to -- like, the horizon in the other one is confounded with the pier, so higher or lower would have been better. Personal preferences seem to be in terms of liking the quieter reflective image in contrast to the one that has more potential action through the two boats and the way the pier forms an arrow toward them. Your comments were so helpful -- thank you so much!
I prefer this one Taffy. Tough call though as both are great . Just a bit more interest I feel with the pier pointing towards the boats. Beautiful reflections! Fav!
