We had organised a car hire in Las Vegas and allowed ourselves 3 days to drive to Denver where we would catch a flight to Chicago. Ron @stray_shooter mapped out a route for us to take which would take us off the main highways and onto some of his favourite roads.

@janeandcharlie Interesting question Jane. We got into Vegas two days after the shooting and there were a couple of police evident near our hotel but we didn't go anywhere that night as we got things organised for the next day so I can't say what it was really like.
However, I was carrying my tripod (lugged it all around the US and never got a single chance to use it) in a black bag about 2 1/2 ft long over my shoulder and given all the comments about the hotels not doing enough and allowing the shooter to take all the weapons to his room, I fully expected to get challenged at some point. I walked past many hotel staff and "security" people and no one gave me a second glance. Nothing at all. I thought that was pretty interesting.
