Fleur de Sel de l'Île de Ré

I certainly didn't know it at the time but the salt marshes on Il de Re have been producing high quality sea salt for many centuries.

While the draining of the marshes and industrialisation marked the decline in the importance of Il de Re and other salt producing areas, the activity that still exists today through the remaining forty artisan salt farmers on the island.

We passed a number of these salt farmers on a morning bike ride out from Les Portes-de-Re. Must be hard work on a hot day.
A fabulous capture of a hard working lady/person. We have been to Guerande which is also a salt paradise, a tough life for the owners.

Flavored salts are the latest seasoning trend here, and actually a lot of them come from France! This is a great capture.
