Here's something you dont see every day

Like many of the fancy leaf Vrieseas, the flower on this Vriesea "Forrest x Milky Way" lasts less than a day. This flower came out this morning and by mid afternoon it had gone.
The flowers are carried on a disproportionately long flower spike that lasts for many months. See http://365project.org/organise/media/5407515
These hybrids are fertilised by hand so you can imagine what a job it is.

How wonderful that you captured it! A lovely shot.

I am so pleased you didn't miss it. Do all the individual flowers open at different times? A really unusual flower. Fav :-)

What a tragic life for that flower! It's so beautiful but it can't hang around :) Great capture :)

A first for me

Sam
It lives for about 4 hours? Oh dear, that seems to be a lot of effort for very little return!

@hermann Yes Sally. If you look at the other pic, you can see the remains of the flowers that have opened earlier. They seem to open progressively from the bottom up. They will last for ages on the flower spike

Great capture Terry and interesting about the life of the flower.I thought they might have been like the Darwin rose and opened and closed everyday.

From the sounds of it, you only had a brief window of time to capture this photo. Nicely done — wonderful focus on those fuzzy anthers.
