Moving House? by terryliv

Moving House?

Now THIS is moving house. I don't know if this happens everywhere but it is certainly not unusual in Queensland. House sold; new owners only want the land and not house so they can build a new house; house is structurally sound; house is sold and moved to a new location. Especially the case with these old Queenslanders. You can see the prime mover on the left waiting to take the house away.

There used to be a place at Burpengary (it may still be there) in Brisbane's north that had a number of houses that had been moved from their original site and were waiting to be sold and relocated. The concept of being able to wander into a used house yard and buy yourself a house certainly amused Billy Connolly on his World Tour of Australia show.
Great capture! it happens down here occasionally, usually on farms. Love how this still has the plumbing and TV antenna attached :)

Love these old houses, they have a lot more character than many of the look all the same in a suburb with a covenant :)

Did not know this info, so happy they re-sell the lovely structures though! We do have one neighborhood where all 20 houses were moved to tract land!

Not sure about Burpengary, but there is a big lot just north of Gympie with lots of old Queenslanders to choose from!

Yes, it doesn't happen often here but the process is long and a lot of work. Quite amazing

The Queenslander style of house makes doing this ideal. The thought of a used house lot is very amusing.

@tomtom Yeah I don't recall seeing the one at Burpengary for a while. It was on the RHS heading north. I'll look out for it next time we head up that way

I just looked up "Ocean and Outback House Removals" and they are from Gympie so that may be where this house is headed.

Nice

Great shot. I wouldn't fancy being responsible for transporting this. We got stuck behind one of these houses being transported once and the road wasn't much wider than the wide load of the truck in some places.

People do that here too. There's an interesting book about one person's adventure "Cottage For Sale- Must Be Moved".

Doesn't happen very often in the US. When it does, it's usually a building of some historical value.

Great image Terry, great depth of field, lots of scary detail on view, don't think my old safety department would be to impressed, suspect these lads do it all the time and know just how safe it is, would never be done over here roads far to narrow;)

They do move houses here but it is usually the owner that does the moving. Or historical houses are sometimes moved and relocated with other historical houses to for a historical village. Have not heard of used house sales. Though I do like the concept. On the other hand They do buy houses then rip them down because they do want to build a bigger better house. Most of these are multi-million dollar homes.

That's a fabulous Queeslander, I love houses like this! They don't do that in the UK but then again I don't think they have wooden houses. My s-i-l has a beautiful Queenslander up in Brisbane. You often see houses being pulled down here but I haven't seen them being transferred anyway. neat capture.

Cool shot. I've seen a fair share of homes moved in the states.

The moving of houses is not a completely foreign practice here but I don't believe I've ever heard of it being done for the reason you gave here. A neighbor's family home was in the way of a new four lane highway coming through so they moved the entire brick structure to a different place on their frame. I was amazed that a brick home would survive being relocated. Good catch for a 365 photo.
