Located across the river from the Wesley Hospital in West End is this Gas Stripping Tower.
The cast iron tower was made in Yorkshire, England in 1912 and shipped out in sections to the South Brisbane Gas and Lighting Company where it was erected not far from its present location. The tower was used to strip ammonia and coal tar from the raw coal gas. The ammonia and coal tar was collected and sold as by products of the process.
The tower ceased operation in 1949 and in 1980, it was dismantled and moved 150m to its present location by the national Trust of Queensland.
