Old Peake Telegraph Station Ruins by terryliv

Old Peake Telegraph Station Ruins

This tour was full of surprises and the ruins of The Peake telegraph station and pastoral settlement were one of them. It is about 20ks off the Oodnadatta Track over a pretty tough 4WD track.

The Peake telegraph repeater station was constructed in 1861 as part of the 3200km Overland Telegraph Line that linked Adelaide in the south to Darwin in the north and provided telegraphic communications between England and Australia.

The station was closed in 1891 when the station facilities were transferred to Oodnadatta.

Super shot. A very desirable residence. Open plan and fully air-conditioned.

It probably seemed so high tech at the time. It's a good example of how quickly things like telegraphs become obsolete.

Nice capture, looks like it has been a lovely building at one time. It has done well to still be standing as much as it is all those years.
