. . .and gigantic by nature.
This is the first time I have had this species of bromeliad, Vriesea Gigantea flower for me. The flower spike, called the inflorescence is about 1.5mtrs high. Overall, this plant is about 2 mtrs from ground. Certainly the largest Vriesea I have seen.
an impressive spike. Its a good background for the vriesa, stands out well. This year we had Alcantaria rubra flowering for the first time, they are impressive but they can rot at the base and just fall over. The vriesas don't seem to have this problem
@shirleybankfarm Not at all Shirley. This one, and in fact most broms, is in a pot. In their natural habitat, they grow in trees and in rock crevices etc and consequently have hardly any root system.
@joannakate Haven't had a Rubra flower for me yet Joanna but a couple of years ago (pre 365) an Alcantarea Vinicolour flowered and it was extremely interesting. One of the shots I took of its flower is one of the backgrounds I use for my desktop
