Ranger Uranium Mine

Day 18 - Jabiru, Kakadu NP

The Ranger Uranium Mine was very controversial when it commenced operation in 1980. It ceased operations in January this year.

It will be interesting to see what happens to the township of Jabiru in the future. The workers at the mine provided year round support to the businesses in Jabiru and with them now gone, the town will be solely dependant on seasonal tourists. But of course, to attract the tourists, you need the infrastructure that the town provides. Jabiru is already showing signs of being a ghost town Very sad.

The Arnhem Land escarpment is in the background.

Lovely shot, such sad times ahead for the inhabitants.

Interesting subject and capture Terry I'm surprised it has closed with Nuclear energy being classified as a zero-emission clean energy source, Uranium is relatively safe to handle as it's weakly radioactive and is primarily an alpha particle emitter:)
