This morning, we are heading off on a bit of a drive.
The whole idea started when we signed up for a 7 day photography tour of Central Australia that was to start and end at Alice Springs. The tour was being hosted by a very good professional photographer that I did a BIF workshop with.
We really love touring the outback so rather than fly into Alice Springs, we planned to make a proper trip out of it and drive there and back.
In early January, the trip was cancelled because of potential Covid complications but given that we were all wound up for it, we decided to still do the trip and do the tour section on our own. On top of that, since we were not doing the tour, we extended our drive to head up to Kakadu NP as well.
We have previously been to all of the places we will visit this time but it has been many years between drinks for some of them.
In deciding which route to take to Alice Springs, I marked every Queensland road we had travelled on a map and then worked out a route that took us as much as possible on new roads. A lot of the time, you don’t have a choice as there is only one viable route available. As much as possible, we will be staying in towns we have not stayed in before. For the first time, we have booked our accommodation ahead. We reckon we are getting a bit old to be wandering into a town in the hope of finding somewhere to sleep. For many of the places we are going to, there is only one accommodation option and if it is full up, there is no option B.
Total trip will be about 11,000kms
I’m never good at commenting but I will probably be even worse over the next few weeks. My apologies in advance. I also have no idea of internet connections in a few of the places we are staying at
I hope you enjoy the next few weeks of postings of Outback Queensland, The Red Centre and The Top End.
I hope you realise that I'm quite envious of you and Rhoda!!!! i love the NT and would love to go back and do it all again. Green envy gone - have a safe and fun trip and post many photos as there are so many opportunities up there :)
Not at all jealous - much! You are covering much the same roads as we did, so looking forward to seeing your photos. Steve took one look at your map and decided we should sell up here, buy a good camper and become permanent Aussie Nomads - watch this space!
@bella_ss Hi Sheralee. Just noticed last night that you are posting again. I need to go back and have a look at what you have been up to.
We stayed a night at one of the caravan parks in Charters Towers and I asked at a couple of places if they knew of a lady called Sheralee. I figured it was an unusual enough name that they would know who I was talking about if they knew you but unfortunately, no one was able to help me. I couldn't remember your family name at the time. You hadn't posted for ages at the time we left home so didn't bother to try and contact you through 365.
What a buggar. Would have liked to have caught up with you.
@terryliv That's such a shame, thanks for thinking of me! The owner of one of the parks would know me but I lead a pretty quiet life :D A gift store in town (Poppet Head) sells my post cards and canvases if you happened to pop in there.
