Caroline Grossmueller Memorial

People dying in the desert from heat exhaustion and thirst is not restricted to times gone by.

Caroline Grossmueller was a 28 year old medical student from Austria and in December 1998, she and her boyfriend took their 4WD camper on the track we followed to Halligan Bay Lake Eyre.

When the camper became bogged, they waited two days beside the track and when no other vehicles arrived, Caroline, an experienced hiker, decided to walk out to the main track - the Oodnadatta Track.

After covering just 30kms in four days Caroline died of heat exhaustion here alongside the Lake Eyre track. She still had 2 litres of water with her and had passed numerous water troughs on her trek. Her boyfriend who remained with the vehicle was rescued the same day that Caroline's body was found.

This is an abbreviated version of the tragedy. For a more detailed account, see http://www.exploroz.com/Forum/Topic/73559/1998_Death_at_Halligans_Bay_-_Caroline_Grossmueller.aspx and http://www.smh.com.au/it-pro/on-the-road-to-gentle-heroism-20090912-fl50.html

Once again I need to apologise for the lack of comments. We are currently on the road visiting relatives down south and wont be back home until later this week. I'll do as best I can as time permits and with variable internet connections.

Sad story. People take the harsh conditions for granted :)

How sad for her and her family!

What a sad story. Nice that somebody has put the memorial stone up. It might make others think twice about trying to beat the elements.

Very sad and a wonder why she did not drink the water. The area reminds me of one here called Death Valley (for a reason, I'm sure).

@cejaanderson She died from heat exhaustion not thirst Jane. Not something you would normally think about.
