Pte Charles Stanley Smith

Better late than never.
My paternal grandmother's, brother Pte Charles Stanley Smith was killed during fighting near Strazeele France in May 1918.
As part of our genealogy research, Rhoda and I visited his grave in the Eblinghem War Cemetery in France in 2012. We were the first relatives to visit his grave and we felt really honoured to be so. Considering I never knew the man existed before I started researching Grandma's family about 2 years earlier and how many cemeteries we had trolled through looking for our ancestors, I was very surprised at how emotional the cemetery visit was.
The photo bottom right is from a postcard he sent to my Grandmother and shows his troop ship, "Boonah" departing Brisbane in Oct 1916. If only they knew. The other pics are self explanatory.
Thanks Denise @gilbertwood for allowing me to copy your tribute to the WW1 Centenary commemoration.

I love his moustache. When I grow up, I am going to grow a moustache like that.

Great collage and nice commentary about the pictures. It is great to learn about our relatives and where they came from and what they went through.

I like how you included both photos from then as well as now. To see his military picture as well as the ship photo, it puts a face on what that gravestone represents. And yes, that's one impressive mustache he's got there.

Fantastic tribute! You certainly have a different story to tell about your great uncle Charlie. it would have been an emotional and proud experience to be able to visit his grave site in France. You have got me wondering what happened to my uncle Charlie...I think he returned, but now I will have to add him to my "to do" list of family history that my sister and I are following up on. It was my pleasure to share :)
