Its been years since we last saw a drover on the side of the road with a herd of cattle. Shades of a bygone era.
For O/S 365ers, in Australia there is the concept of "The Long Paddock". In times of drought when feed is scarce, cattle were taken out onto the roadside and left to graze off what grass there was between the fence and the road. Because the length of the paddock was as long as the road, it was called "The Long Paddock".
I don't know if this still happens as I haven't seen it for ages. Perhaps Margaret @ubobohobo can enlighten us.
When I was young (quite a long time ago), we used to put our sheep out on the road when the farm paddocks got dry in summer. As long as we moved them 3 miles, as it was then, they could stay out there feeding on the verges. I don't think that happens any more either.
