Our newly adopted child was back again today so I took some pics of the eye we thought was crook and went to see the Brisbane Bird Vet. Yep, there really is such a person/business.
They confirmed that he was most likely blind in the eye but that he would learn to live with it and that he would be OK.
The only thing that worries us is that he is always so hungry when he comes down so he is obviously not finding enough food on his own at present. The other thing that is a concern is that we think he is quite young.
SOOC - no crop so obviously I was VERY close to him.
It is a good job he has you to look after him. Great close up. We have a kookaburra here who is very tame and lets us get really close to him, so maybe he is just used to you getting close. Hope he is able to find his own food soon.
Ahh, that's such a shame, that a young bird has impaired vision already. Thank goodness you're offering him food to supplement his diet. It's likely hard for him to hunt with a diminished view of the world. However does he fly being only sighted on one side?? (You can get quite close because he can't see you there???? Nah, he appreciates the food you give him. What do you offer him, I wonder.)
I will be interested to hear how he gets on. He is lucky that you will be supplementing his tucker. I wonder if the injury was inflicted by a butcher bird :)
We took our chicken to the Brisbane Bird Vet. They are amazing there, and got her back to normal in no time. It only cost $600 (cough, splutter, for a chicken??!!)
