Epilogue - School of the Air 3

In the 1950s and 60s, wireless radio was used by the teachers and students to communicate and often, in the absence of electricity, these radios were pedal radios where the operator had to generate the power by pedalling as if they were on a bike.

In later years, the wireless radios were replaced by short wave radios and these in turn by computers and the internet.

Prior to the internet, the teacher would have to mail out workbooks to the student who would then complete the work after the lesson and send it back for assessment. This process could take weeks. Nowadays, work is submitted on line and the teacher can provide feedback on the same day.
This reminds me of Margaret Pengelly, an education and community pioneer in her remote area. I am amazed at the results of her life's work.

I am glad I made this comment because I decided to tag her, and I found that she was no longer in my list of friends somehow! So alarmed! She's back in now, so thanks, Terry!

Amazing how they made this work, with such great lengths of time between doing the work, and getting the marked copy.

A true case of modern technology working well. It must have been such hard work for both student and teacher before the internet and email.
