Hunkered Down

We live about a 30-minute drive from Mackay Island National Wildlife Refuge, just over the border in North Carolina. A few times a year they have "Open Road Days" where anyone can drive through the refuge on roads normally closed to the public. Today was one of those days.

There weren't many birds to be seen today just after daybreak, but this great blue heron was demonstrating a very different technique of hunting for breakfast from what the great egret in today's Eclectica Album photo was using.
What a treat to be able to see this heron who is trying out a new approach.
