I saw a CH-47 Chinook helicopter flying around near Naval Air Station Oceana and pulled off the road so that I could get this really mediocre picture of the beast (I had forgotten to return my camera's settings to their normal state after last night's twilight pictures).
The Chinook is a monster of a 'copter. It can haul 55 troops, or a 24,000 lb / 10,886 kg payload. On this one the long boom projecting from its underside is a refueling probe. It has to extend that far out to avoid the rotors.
As we live with two RAF bases within 15 miles of us, we get these things very often - Too often!. They tend to practice flying in circles over our village so much so that it is sometimes impossible to hear the TV!
