Five years ago our youngest daughter moved to the outskirts of Walsall, a once beautiful city in the Black Country. The outskirts, especially its arboretum, are really beautiful but the city centre has become quite rundown with many empty shops and uncared-for buildings. I spent the day there with Kaye today as she paid for me to have a lovely manicure for my birthday on Saturday. While she had hers done afterwards, I went for a wander around the town and found some interesting and unexpected sights. For instance, I had no idea that Jerome K. Jerome (Three Men in a Boat) was born in Walsall.
A fascinating piece of history here, Lesley. I have never given any thought to who authored "Three Men in a Boat," but after reading your piece, I googled Jerome K. Jerome. I learned that he wrote a sequel about a cycling tour in Germany, "Three Men on Wheels." On a different note, a visit with your daughter and a manicure sounds like a sweet way to celebrate your birthday.
