Things that make a proper pub (according to Dirk):
Friendly bar staff and regular customers
A good fire
No loud, trendy music
No gangs of loud yoofs
No flashing games machines
Dogs allowed
Beer mats - on tables and on walls
A collection of personal beer glasses hung in the wall for use only by their named owners
Quirky stuff on walls to look at if conversation dies
The ability to order a ‘Brown & Mild’

Excellent. No sports TVs? The problem we have especially in our hipster corner of North East London is trendy 'craft ales' that all taste of grapefruit.
I would think most sensible folk would agree wholeheartedly ….except the young & trendy perhaps! Can a real pub survive with only selling drinks these days though. Do they need food….then they need staff….oh dear it’s complicated!
