When I was a kid, I went to all kinds of lectures/events at the Hermitage museum that had to do with history of art - from ancient to modern times. From all of that avalanche of information, the one thing always stood out for me - "Fayum Portraits": naturalistic portraits that eventually replaced the "stylized" mummy masks/faces. For some reason, the name, the period, the function etc - all stuck in my head. Now I am always excited to see one every time I bump into one of them at a museum. This one is taken at the Kelsey Museum of Archeology in Ann Arbor.
Thanks for visiting!
