I guess in life that, at best, if you 'take a shot in the dark', you have a fifty-fifty chance of success. Well, this is a shot in the dark of two 'Nifty 50s' - a Nikkor 1.8D on the left; a Sony E mount 1.8 OSS on the right... and I'm hoping for 100% success ;-))
Best viewed large - on black!
(And yes, the shot was taken with a 50mm (equivalent)!)
@anazad511@fishers@louuncouth Thanks all, and for Lou - the lighting (no it wasn't done completely in the dark!) was very simple: a strobe in a 70 cm soft box postioned 33 deg off-axis to camera left, at the same height as the subject... and angled way off to the left so that only the peripheral light illuninated the scene. After that it was just a question of finding the right setting for the strobe.
Fantastic lighting on these two best friends of yours. One of the great things about being part of se7en is seeing photographers who I didn't use to see. I like your photography very much and am now following you.
and believe it or not, today i was thinking of shooting a photo magazine with a lens on top of it...that's why i started the discussion if someone who has been longer noticed any pattern...it's the 3rd or 4th time that I see a picture of something i was considering as an object/subject of my photo of the day...interesting feeling
@anelim Well, this isn't what I had planned at all for today... but the weather has been simply atrocious. The idea for this first came with the notion of 50/50 - I shot the lenses against a white background and the result was awful. My wife asked what I was shooting, and I said "It's a bit of a shot in the dark", and ... KAPOW!!
@jocasta Thank you for the compliment Jocasta which has left me a bit dumbstruck after only 5 weeks on here... and of course for the follow.. I'm following Se7en (who isn't?) but I am now also following you - I like your work very much.
Richard, can I ask where you learned so much about lighting. This is a lovely capture. It could be in an advertisement. Are you having lousy weather too. Well, if you didn't have to shovel it then consider yourself lucky. LOL What I like about your pictures is the different things you tackle.
Hello Joan, I consider myself very much a beginner so far as lighting is concerned, but what's got me to the point where I can today (usually) get the image I'm after is a combination of studying the vast resources available on the Internet and then trying the ideas for myself. The light came on (sorry!) when I realised that the pros nearly always light their shots - even outdoors - because then they are the masters of the light in their shots and not the servants. And what's more... it's fun!
Fabulous shot. Love the dark tones and composition. Does look great viewed large... have only just bought a speedlight, need to get the hang of it at some point!
That's a lot of 50's :)
