...tonight our old garden table was carpeted with May Bugs. They are the only bugs that give me the heeby-jeebies... especially when they get into the house - ugh! (For those who might never have seen one - they are about 35mm long and their wing-cases make a horrible dry chattering noise when they fly.)
They only live for a couple of days in May I think (or is that May Flies) and then die off again, having mated - I remember my room being full of them once - they are nasty looking things, but this is a great shot of one.
@malcolm2@iwatts I hate it when they fly around your head and settle in your hair - their feet are sticky and you really have to pick them off you... eeaaghhh!
Very cool shot wonderful control of lighting; enough to get the detail but not too much to blow it out. I have never seen antennae with fans at their ends before. Really great lighting so well balanced and controlled. fav
Neat macro photo and ditto what others said -- antennae that are weird in a cool way. The bugs I really hate to see en masse are earwigs. They get into the plastic tubs we use to store stuff up in Wisconsin for the annual get-together in July. Even though there are lids on the tubs, you open one up and there will be earwigs all over in there. Ugh! Still, I guess I'd better not try to trade you earwigs for may bugs. I probably don't know what I'd be in for.
@jocasta Best keep it that way Joy - they are horrible things: their flight is unpredictable so they bump into lots of things, including people! They also stop flying suddenly drop out of the air and lay on their backs with their legs waving in the air. And if all this was not enough, they swarm so you get dozens of them all together.
Great detail. They sound absolutely horrid and I am glad we don't have them here. That said they are very interesting to look at. I am amazed at the detail in this tiny bug. As much as I do not want him in my house, I would love to get some macros of that interesting face. :)
