This is my third image for NF-SOOC-September. What's that all about? Well it's a challenge I've set myself - and hopefully some of my fellow 365ers will join me - to shoot only with a 50mm (or equivalent) lens in September and to post all images as they came out of the camera without any other processing or cropping. You can read about it here - http://365project.org/discuss/themes-competitions/23475/back-to-basics-who-s-up-for-a-big-challenge-in-september
How about joining me?
When I first spotted this I thought it was a Cep de Bordeaux - very sought after, very tasy. The gills or, in this case, the 'mousse' give the game away. This is a Faux Cep or Cep de Pin - a pine cep. It is edible but has a bland taste and a slightly slimy feel in the mouth... so I left it where it was!
Well, I've just spent a good portion of time reading about your NF-SOOC challenge and viewing the images you've posted thus far for the month. Impressive! (Both the images and the challenge's idea.) I'm tempted to join in. This would mean I couldn't shoot in RAW, right? Even if the data is saved as a .jpg without any altering done? The macaw collage (and thank you for your compliment on those pics) is made up of RAW images that were not altered in any way other than being saved as a .jpg. I started this 365 project with only sooc images but was inspired by the creativity on this site to dabble in post-editing. Mmm... something to think about... and hurriedly as it's already heading towards the 4th of the month.
I really like this photo. I think it shows how good a sooc shot can be and that it isn't necessary to process everything. This challenge is going to help me look for the right lighting, shadows, a good POV and just the right timing to make the shot so I will have to be more attentive when I'm looking for my daily shot.
@mccarth1@gosia@tosee@tahoemb@wanabe Thank you all, and particularly for your comments on the PoV. Part of this challenge is to forego for a month the 'easy' option of finding a pleasing composition using a zoom lens or by cropping in post and therefore forcing me to really concentrate on composition at the point of capture. Even after only three days I find that I'm thinking differently as I look through the viewfinder. This mushroom was just at the side of a forest track which, through use, is slightly lower than its surroundings; the camera was sitting right on the track for this shot. I did take others from a more conventional point of view, but I much preferred this one. I hope you find these comments useful - they certainly help me to think through what I'm learning.
@lyndemc Hi Denise and thank you for your investment of time - reading all of that thread is not for the fainthearted! I don't see a problem with what you propose: I choose to forego raw this month because I thought it would be useful to find out what I could produce directly from camera. The point of this challenge for me, is not that the images are unprocessed, but that they are unprocessed by me. By choosing a camera style and sticking with it for the month, my options to influence the final image rest with composition, DoF, exposure, colour balance, etc. - most of which I don't normally think much about at the point of capture. Your actual 'rules' aren't that important I think as long as they are a constant for the month, leaving you to improve your shooting technique. Hope this reassurance will persuade you to join our select little group, Denise.
