Sandbox365 - Textures: Third time lucky?

This is my third (and perhaps my last!) attempt at producing a textured image for the current Sandbox365 Photoshop challenge. My first two attempts earlier this week received a mixed response, and I confess to not being over the moon with them myself, so I resolved to have one more try... and this is it!

Views nicely on black too.

this works!! texture really complements the flowers. l like this

The orchids are beautiful and the colour of the texture that you put in is just right!

Mmm, not too sure. I like the idea, but I think it still needs some fine tuning. The flowers seem to disappear in the background.

This is so great. I think you've done it. (But I'm not knowledgeable like others!) I just know I love it and would gladly frame and display it at home!

@whimsicalgrateful They do indeed blend with the background Marta - that was the effect that I wanted! Textures are definitely not my strong point it would seem ;-)

@ceilidh Bless you Margaret, happily I can always rely on you for an encouraging word. I've always said that in photography my strengths lie with the technical side more so than the artistic side... and so it would seem. We can't all be good at every aspect - well I can't anyway!

this is lovely - Fav

While I think the technical side of your photography is extremely strong, I think you have an amazing eye which is definitely the artistic side :) It has been interesting to see your textures evolve this week- thank you for sharing them.

@vignouse I wouldn't throw the sponge just yet. I still think your work is amazing, especially on this one. I think you'd only need really minor tweaking. One thing my eye found confusing is the way the text seems to continue on the flower in the top left corner. I also think your photography is very artistic as well as technical. Art is a very personal thing so you can't expect to please everyone. And anyway, who am I to talk? I've got miles to walk before I catch up with you! ;-)

I really like this one. Of course, I love the color purple and orchids are about my favorite flower of all, especially since I deem them so photogenic! I know nothing of the technique you are processing, so have no opinion on the merits of this whatsoever. I only know this is eye pleasing and I would love to have a print of it!

Nailed it! Absolutely gorgeous. I actually pulled this up from clicking on the tags without realizing it was yours. Incredible!!

@whimsicalgrateful Thanks for taking the time to explain Marta, that's a very helpful thing to do. Interestingly, I actually wanted all the text to be visible on top of the flowers but I wasn't able to achieve that and also have adequate separation of the flowers from the background so I had to settle for just a suggestion of text. It's been a fun thing to do, even if a little frustrating at times.

wonderful compostion

I like this one, and the others textures you've done. Interesting that they haven't received the notice some of your others have, different strokes...

Nice composition and processing

There you go, I like this (for real). See sending you to look at the class I took inspired you. LOL Okay check off another box. Well done.

I enjoy all your shots... you are an inspiration...

Looks good to me but I realize I'm much less critical of your work than you.
January 31st, 2015
Love the textures you chose for the background, and the shades of purple. Very nicely done.

This is beautiful.

Your shot caught my eye right away, without knowing it was yours. I think that orchids are very difficult to shoot well and yours are really pretty, with the glowing light around the edges. I like the textures and complimentary colors very much. I have no real experience with textures, other than the few times I have tried them myself, so (for me) the jury is still out on how to do handwriting. I like the way it appears here. Most importantly (from my point of view), I really admire people who stretch themselves artistically and do things that are outside their usual comfort zone, even if the result is less than perfect (to their eye). Applause to you for doing that... good work! :)

This one makes me think, and makes me look at it over and over. I really like the way the text goes into the orchids - maybe not everyone does, but for me that is a key part of the image. Thanks @vignouse for inspiring me to jump outside of my comfort zone!

I certainly would not argue that your strengths on the technical side are superb, but from what I've seen your artistic talent is enviable as well!! This is lovely!
January 31st, 2015
Orchid and textured background are another feather in your cap. Bravo!
January 31st, 2015
I love the texture you have chosen for the background (my fav colour of course!) The composition of the orchid is also great. So I think you nailed it - I love it!
Having just one of these myself with complex plants, I know how long it can take!
January 31st, 2015
Well I love this texture and I think it pairs beautifully with that flower. Obviously you have learned from your earlier efforts.
January 31st, 2015
I like how you've used the texture here with the flower's color--well done!
January 31st, 2015
ah - this is beautiful Richard - the textures thing will have to wait until I have some free time - work is consuming me for the next week
January 31st, 2015
this is quite lovely... i have struggled with textures as well, and have come to the conclusion that they just are not for me... i also think that it's important to think about textures as not something to set out to use, but rather something you would add to an image that is otherwise, in your mind, missing something... texture tends to add a certain dreamy quality to an image generally reducing contrast... so if you are not about dreamy images, or if you normally think in terms of contrast, a texture will not, i think, fit naturally into an image you would normally be creating...

Totally beautiful work !! Richard you are fantastic at this. You have an eye for colors, subject and textures that go well together. I only wish i new how to do all this. First i have to get a better program than Adobe Elements 9 and not sure yet what to get. Continue your great work. Fav
February 1st, 2015
@jocee Thanks Joce - you could do this with PSE 9 I think as I'm sure you can do layers with it, which is how this was done.
February 1st, 2015
I like this better than the others but it softens the towers a little too much for my taste. I find your self analysis of your work to be amazing.
February 1st, 2015
@barbiws Thanks for your comments Barbara - the flowers as shot are sharp beyond belief but like that they really didn't work with the texture so I softened them and applied an edge blur... we're all still learning, which is why we're here - at least, it's certainly why I'm here!
February 1st, 2015
@vignouse Thank you Richard for your reply !! I will have to experience deeper with this program then instead of getting myself into something more difficult. I need to learn layers, i have not yet done any of this before but really want to learn. I really like the work you do and hope one day i can do stuff like this. :)
