This street is preserved as it would have been around 400 years ago - to the left is a sheer drop of about 40 metres to the old port with its attendent buildings - the ship's chandlers, the harbour master's office, etc. These buildings were originally owned and occupied by those who needed to see the activity in the port and the comings and goings - merchants mostly - but didn't need to be right in the thick of it.
As a contrast to yesterday's image, all of these buildings are occupied - discreetly - for commercial purposes although in many cases the owner also lives 'over the shop'. Here we have an artist's gallery, a glass-blower and a jewellery maker.
I love these ancient structures and the stories behind them, Richard. It just boggles my mind to think about what was taking place in this very spot 400 years ago!
This looks like such a wonderful place to live! The buildings have so much character. Sounds like you could easily spend a day walking and visiting the different shops. Fav!
@skipt07 I spent a couple of hours photographing alleyways and ended up with at least ten images that I would have been happy to post on here... trying to stick to sameday posting though!
Love the pop of yellow
