This is Maurice Spitz who, together with Laure Ducos, performs Mediterranean and middle-eastern music and song from the middle ages under the name of Zyria. The instrument you see here is an Oud, an old middle eastern stringed instrument that is a distant ancestor of the lute.
Maurice plays oud and percussion; Laure plays flute and percussion and sings with the most glorious wide register voice. Together as Zyria they performed the Sunday concert in Paimpont Abbey at the end of this afternoon.
I've chosen to present Maurice in film-noir style in a bid to echo something of the drama in his music - view on black for the best effect. Laure is proving a little more difficult to present well, but hopefully you'll see her tomorrow!
There's a whole lot to like about this Richard! But maybe it is not a good idea to pay much attention to what I say! All the photos I upload and think will do well do not! Anyway, I like the intense expression on his face as he plays! I like your choice of making this b/w. And I like the juxtaposition between the size of his instrument and his glasses! I wonder how long it takes to wear glasses that small for you not to see the frames? Fav!
Great shot! Love the processing. And that little bit of movement shone in the right hand.
My father played in a middle-eastern band for quite some time. We have an Oud laying around somewhere, I think.
