This is a follow on from my 2 January post in this album showing a Blue Tit plucking up courage to dive down to the bottom of the feeder to grab a whole nut instead of just pecking away through the wire cage of the feeder. Today I captured this one just as he was turning around to climb back out; his movement frightened another tit on the feeder which then made off at a rate of knots ;-)
@jyokota They don't have time to get stuck: even when the feeder is almost empty, a return trip to the bottom takes less than 2 seconds... t's not easy to catch one!
I'm in the process of trying this after viewing your images, but the blue tits here haven't quite grasped the concept yet and are still pecking at the nuts through the feeder. Another great shot of your in action.
@gamelee Start by overfilling the feeder so that the tits can just stand on the top rim and eat; as the level drops they begin to lean in and after a few days of having a whole nut to eat instead of a few shreds... they begin to be more adventurous. It's mainly the Bluetits who try this but we have a few Great Tits who have learned the trick too and one Greenfinch.
